At a National recognition event in Croke Park on Saturday, 9th November, St Peter’s Club
received The GAA Green Club Award from Uachtarán CLG, Jarlath Burns.
Delighted to collect the award on behalf of the Club were green club volunteers, Martin & Ursula Lavery who along with others attend to the Club gardens with such love, creativity and attention to detail.
The GAA Green Club Programme is framed around 5 sustainability themes – Energy, Water,Waste, Biodiversity and Travel & Transport – and our Club was commended for the extensivework we have done in support of all 5 themes, including:
✓ Installing solar panels thus allowing us to generate green energy on Club premises,
save money on electricity bills and protect us against rising energy costs.
✓ Replacing conventional lighting throughout our Club buildings and grass pitch with LED
lighting.
✓ Protecting the water quality from the Club’s very own borehole or well through daily
end-of-line flushing, regular inspections by DAERA’s environment agency and ongoing
3rd party maintenance financed by the Club.
✓ Reducing, with the aim of eliminating single use plastic bottles, and the initial
introduction of 500 bespoke personalised aluminium bottles with our Club crest and
member’s name, initials or the name they wish to be known as and the installation of
refill stations at different parts of the Club.
✓ Converting waste ground at the far side of the 3G into our sensory, community and
memorial gardens named after Benedict Lavery (RIP), our beloved Club President for
37 years. Croke Park officials applauded the disability-friendly nature of the gardens,
that they are open to the wider community, have bathroom as well as tea/coffee
making facilities on site and display an abundance of colour & garden ornaments and
other interesting features. They also noted the planting of 500 sapling trees, 27 apple
trees and various other shrubs throughout the grounds as well as the erection of bird
boxes.
None of the above would or could have been carried out without the support of the Club
committees and the work of our green club volunteers. We have plans to further develop the
gardens and Club facilities in the new year and would like to involve more Club members as
well as the local community but to do so, we need further support. So, if you can devote 1 or 2 hours a week or indeed a month, send a text or call 07905456632.
Every little bit helps!
